creating
through a global lens
ENGL 199
With a passion for writing and web design, I pursued courses that allowed me to take a creative approach to important issues in the world. As a freshman, I took an Interdisciplinary Writing course, where one of our assignments was a multimodal project. Amid the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, I wanted to help my peers become effective allies. The final product was Educated Allies, a website with over 100 BLM resources. I also implemented a blog called From Our Pack, where I invited UW students to share their stories. This project solidified my interest in using digital tools to contribute to social change.

HONORS 220

I further explored this interest in an Honors course I took in my sophomore year, Science and Engineering for Social Justice, to cover a lesser-known topic. For my final project, I created an informational pamphlet for medical students about the impact of language barriers in healthcare. As a Korean American with an interest in healthcare, this project sparked my interest in improving cultural competence to reduce health disparities. But I never would've imagined that two years later, I would apply what I learned from this course to my Departmental Honors thesis on developing a cultural adaptation for a digital health intervention.

The Daily
Autumn 2019 - Spring 2022
Outside the classroom, I explored my passion for journalism as a reporter for The Daily. In my three years on staff, most of my articles focused on research, particularly about COVID-19. Not everyone has access to information about the pandemic, so writing these articles made me passionate about bringing science to a broader audience. I also interviewed diverse members of the UW community, including medical students, physicians, professors, and researchers, which allowed me to amplify underrepresented voices in medicine and research.
