Palermo Lab

Through the Scan Design Innovations in Pain Research Program, I connected with Dr. Tonya Palermo at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Given my curiosity about digital health, Dr. Palermo helped me build a project that assessed how teens engage with a chronic pain management app. This ultimately became the focus of my Departmental Honors thesis and I was awarded the Mary Gates Research Scholarship and the Thomas Sedlock Icon Scholarship for my work. I'm excited to continue with this lab as a Clinical Research Coordinator during my gap year!

Undergraduate Research Leaders

As a URL, I continued to openly share my struggles and successes in research. I also facilitated a workshop to help my peers practice the skill of science communication and shared my experience as an undergraduate researcher with Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal. In Autumn 2022, I completed an Honors independent study, where I worked with our Undergraduate Research Program Director and institutional diversity professionals at Oregon State University to write a publication about a research mentoring tool.

Honors Communications & PR Internship

My Honors Communications Internship allowed me to synthesize my research and leadership experiences while learning about ways to communicate with specific audiences about a wide variety of topics. Some of my most notable projects include helping to produce our annual Global Challenges event, curating our first-ever student exhibit in the Honors Suite, and releasing new Honors merch. I’m looking forward to applying lessons from my internship to my future as an innovative researcher and communicator.

Honors Peer Mentoring Program

In the second year of the HPMP, my leadership style changed as I started to lead from behind. With three teams and a Senior Coordinator for each, I learned how to play to the strength of my peers and delegate responsibilities. As we approached the end of the year, we trained students who would take on our roles, ensuring that they had the resources they needed to keep the program’s momentum going. I’m proud that what was once my idea is now a thriving program that will be handed off to the next generation of student leaders.
